At Belabumbum women’s well being is always top of mind. Ever since the quarantine to contain the spread of COVID-19 started, I have been so concerned about how the added stress of confinement, unemployment, and the challenging duties of child care might be making violence in homes more frequent, more severe and more dangerous.
This Mother’s Day we are very pleased to be able to support Safe Horizon an organization that provides a refuge and services to women and children fleeing domestic violence in NYC. With 8 locations across the 5 boroughs in NYC, Safe Horizon provides shelter for 715, including many moms and their children. With help from my daughter, we shipped a mix of 750 pjs, leggings, robes, and bras for the women currently living in their shelters.
My heart goes out to all of the multi-tasking mamas who have been tested in unprecedented ways during the Coronavirus pandemic– working from home, homeschooling, trying to get food on the table, being isolated from family, having to deal with the uncertainty of how their birth plans might unfold. This day I am also so keenly feeling the pain for many mothers trying desperately in these difficult times to protect their children from violence and fear. I cannot imagine feeling so un-safe at home that you have to flee for shelter to protect your own well being and that of your children.
Sending big love to all this Mother’s Day.
