For Earth Day – we have a number of sustainable products we’d love for you to check out. For each product, we’ve provided a brief description of how it’s making a small impact.
None of these items will single-handedly change the world 😀 – but we hope you take away how each one is a piece in our larger sustainability puzzle, as we work hard to deliver products that are better for the planet, in all sizes and price points.
For a bit of context, Adore Me has quietly been transforming our entire supply chain and creation process with the target of 100% sustainably made products by 2024. Given the breadth and range of our products, making them increasingly better for the planet is a process.
Bras are hard – there are on average 20-40 components, including things traditionally made of all types of materials, from plastic to metal to fabrics. The more components and complexity – the tougher things get to make sustainably. Organic cotton PJ’s are very possible, a bralette is a bit easier, an underwire bra gets harder, and a corset, 🙀.
It’s why our Chief Design Officer calls the pursuit of a 100% sustainably made bra her holy grail. Every different new technique and fabric we work with is part of the journey to get us there.
Adore Me understands we did not start out as a sustainable brand – but we’re committed to transforming our products and business. These are just a few of the material changes we’ve started making as we move forward with this journey.
Amellia Contour – Spacer Bra
This spacer bra is so light and breathable that it is great for days that call for extra comfort. There are some extra details in this bra, like lace band front and wings, but the most exciting part – it is made in a sustainable way.
With spacer bra technology, the padding is built with multi-layered fabric, which means it can be molded and dyed directly, creating less waste while expelling fewer chemicals. Amellia comes in sizes up to 46DDD and has a matching cheeky or thong panty with lace.
“The first time I saw a spacer bra cup I thought it was odd and squishy. After I started working with spacer bra development, I fell in love with the lightness, breathability, and simplicity of the cups. There’s no need for an extra layer of fabric over the cup, the spacer itself dyes, you never worry about yellowing, and without traditional foam, the manufacturing process lets off significantly less toxic gas – a win for everyone!” – Kaitlin, Design Director
Floretta Unlined – Organic Cotton Bralette
“The rib-knit fabric is very soft and feels great on the body, the perfect thing for a bralette where you don’t have a cup or anything distracting from the fabric.” – Kaitlin, Design Director
Crafted from 100% organic cotton, this wireless bralette is a great everyday option and offers just the right amount of coverage and support. It looks pretty too, featuring delicate lace details made out of recycled nylon. Floretta comes in black and tea rose shades and has a matching panty. It was originally offered only in our core size range, but due to Floretta’s success – stay tuned for a Plus version!
Baylie – Cyclo Recycled Sweats
We’re kind of obsessed with Cyclo technology, the recycling system used for our Bailey line.
Here’s a quick synopsis (there’s a longer explanation here):
Most of the fashion industry has been promoting the idea of turning plastic bottles into recycled fabrics. That’s a good thing…..but……
Mechanically recycling fabric waste is a much better long-term solution. Cyclo takes the fabric waste created during clothing manufacturing, and reforms it into new yarns. This not only helps solve for all the fabric that would’ve ended up in landfills, this type of yarn is also more easily broken down again to create new yarn (so a Bailey sweatshirt could one day easily be recycled into a new item of clothing, unlike most clothing made from recycled plastic).
It’s a step towards a fully closed-loop process where the fashion industry cuts out waste and creates new things from its own waste. That’s why the Bailey scored a 4 out of 5 in our AIM product impact scoring system (also – you can watch this video from Cyclo about how it works)
Alissa – Organic Cotton PJs
Inspired by ’70s nostalgia, a pale banana yellow tank and stripes & flower print short is a perfect pair to snuggle up this spring. Made out of 100% organic cotton, this soft PJ set is available in sizes XS-4X.
Amelia High Waisted Period Panties
7 million tampons end up in a landfill every year on average. We strongly believe in a few years, we’ll all look back on the sheer volume of plastic waste generated by tampons as a bygone era.
Our Joyja period panty line is our effort to push this goal forward. We also built the brand on a one-for-one donation model, as the problem of period poverty is a major global challenge we want to tackle.
Gemma High Waisted – Panties Made of Deadstock Fabric
Nearly 15-20% of textile used in the manufacturing of clothes ends up as waste. Using deadstock fabric is one of the most sustainable options because it’s using something that has already been made and could potentially be thrown away without use. This is why we incorporated deadstock materials into our panties line.
Digitally Printed Swimwear
The World Bank estimates around 20% of global industrial water pollution comes from textile dyeing and process. There are different washings and reparations that the fabric has to go through and one way to reduce this pollution is through digital printing that transfers colors directly onto the fabric, so fewer washes and processing are made afterward.
Digital printing is becoming more common in the fashion industry. Picture a giant printer that a fabric sheet runs through, rather than traditional screen printing. It requires far less water (cuts up to 50% used in production), and uses dyes much more efficiently.
“Traditional textile & dyeing processes create a ton of water pollution, so we wanted to take steps to lower this impact by switching to digital printing. Plus, it saves 50% more water compared to other printing techniques.” – Arianna, Senior Designer
